Security Awareness – How to Make Sure Your Day on the Job is Risk Minimized

By Gunnar Sommerfeldt

When most people get up in the morning, the furthest thing from their minds is usually security concerns. This in itself is a good thing, but not when the risks are so readily available to make life a very hard struggle.

A few minor precautions can be the line of defense that holds disaster at bay.

Depending on what line of work you are in, your journey to the workplace can be more or less exposed to risk. Changing the route you travel on a non-routine schedule is a good idea in any case. It will make sure that anyone with dishonest intentions watching your daily doings will have a harder time tracking you. One of the most popular ways of mapping a person’s life is to see what they do in the morning, and if you manage to foil that modus operandi (M.O.) the would-be criminals might just decide that the trouble is too great, and move on to someone else.

Take care while driving, if you drive, to your workplace. A major cause of motor vehicle accidents is stress and lack of focus in traffic. The phenomenon known as road rage is triggered by stress, and also causes a lot of the traffic violence that occurs every day, all over the world. Try to minimize your use of private transportation, and change regularly between public services such as bus, train, tram or even taxi. As with your route, you should try to avoid sticking to one service for too long.

Finally, at the workplace, your biggest risk is your co-workers. New employees are always a concern, while long time employees paints a different threat image. If you do carry personal information or belongings with you to work, make sure they are locked up safely during your entire day – theft is one of the biggest causes of security breaches at the workplace, and that includes both private and corporate risks.
Violence is also prevalent in the workplace, and with so many other day-to-day situations, most of the episodes are triggered by stress or fatigue, which can happen in even the most serene of environments. Do your best to avoid situations where you have to confront a tired or stressed co-worker, and rather than trying to solve an escalating conflict yourself, take it to your supervisor. Nearly everyone has one. Or more.

Routines are both your friends and your enemies. While trying to avoid publicly visible routines, make sure you keep and adhere to a few private ones. Check in with your family or loved ones at least once during each day, and make sure you receive a response if your preferred method is either SMS or e-mail or other instant messaging.

Lastly, plan ahead, and keep your plans private. Having a plan will save you a lot of trouble, but that plan in the wrong hands will earn you even more trouble.
