“Varied Opinions” meet the end…for now.

President Obama making surprise appearance
President Obama making surprise appearance

Obama’s defusement of the whole Gates/Crowley/Black/White noise with his surprise appearance at a WH press briefing yesterday has pretty effectively brought the debate to an end (as far as to an end a debate such as that can ever come) and with this comment;
[ad name=”in-post”]

[President Obama] did not apologize but softened his language. “I continue to believe, based on what I have heard, that there was an overreaction in pulling Professor Gates out of his home to the station,” he said. “I also continue to believe, based on what I heard, that Professor Gates probably overreacted as well.”

Mr. Obama described Sergeant Crowley as an “outstanding police officer and a good man” who has “a fine track record on racial sensitivity.” But he added that the incident was a reminder that “because of the difficulties of the past, you know, African-Americans are sensitive to these issues.”

– made it clear that both parties were probably to blame. He also expressed that this was an encounter between two good men, who for whatever reasons were unable to resolve the situation that developed in the way that it should have been.

Blogs, social media and the traditional press have been like hungry wolves on a dead cow on this case (including SB) and opinions have varied from Gates being as close to sainthood as one can come, to one commenter noting that “O’Bama is smart enough to know he is in trouble. But he has gone too far in being black; we whites will never trust him again.” And there’s the scope of things.

All right… what’s next?
