Product Review; 5.11 Tactical Sleet 8″ Boots
Everyone knows (or should know) that boots can save lives. Good boots can be the difference between catching all sorts of nasty diseases and staying healthy both on and off the battle field, or on or off duty. Dry boots that will keep your feet at a comfortable temperature are important, but just as important is it that they will keep you on your feet in both difficult terrain and on the road, maintaining support for your ankle and the soles of your feet.
5.11 has a good reputation in the security field, and these cold weather boots are no blemish on that reputation. A -25 degree F (that’s a whopping -31 degrees C) rating is ambitious, and we would not recommend using these boots in weather that cold for longer periods of time, but there is no doubt that with 200G Thinsulate, it’s possible to use them for shorter periods in that kind of temperature.
Specs are as follows:
- 200G Thinsulate™ insulation
- -25 °F comfort rating
- High performance waterproof and breathable membrane
- Bloodborne pathogen resistant
- Full-grain leather and 1200D nylon upper
- Antibacterial and moisture-wicking lining
- Shock Mitigation System™
- Anti microbial and odor control insole
- Phylon midsole for cushion and comfort
- Rigid lasting board
- Composite shank
- Oil- and slip-resistant quiet outsole
These boots are comfortable and warm, and will indeed serve you well. There are a couple of negative points however (depending on your specific needs);
- Soles are soft (as with all 5.11 boots) and this means a higher comfort level, but a lower resistance to wear. If you plan on using these boots off road, that doesn’t matter, and can be a plus, but on hard surfaces, this will be noticeable.
- Thinsulate is good insulation, but does not breathe well with synthetic fibers. That’s also it’s imperative to pair Thinsulate boots with real wool socks. This will keep you dry, and even if you do get wet, wool will still insulate and keep you comfortable – synthetic fibers will not.
- 5.11’s real leather boots require maintenance. This is not a problem if you’re used to leather boots, but for the novice this might seem a tiring task. When you get them, make sure to treat them with leather polish that will keep the material soft and water resistant. Do this before they get wet.
These are excellent boots that we can recommend to anyone as fall and winter boots. Take good care of them, and they will serve you extremely well. 5.11 boots are available at a number of locations, but are often overpriced at retail stores. Get them online if you are sure of your size – this is also good for people with larger than average sizes – 13 1/2 and up are available almost exclusively online, for example from Amazon.
