Online precautions – a short note on silly people.

We don’t do computer security here, and neither do we much concern ourselves with internet dating. However, this little gem out of Norway caught our eye. For those of you not reading Norwegian, the article says this guy got robbed after inviting home a chick he met online.

Fair enough, many of us have done that, but hang on…
He invites her home. To his apartment. A girl he’s never met in person before aaaand she’s not from his country.

All right. Anyway, seems things were going well until she snaps when he wants to have his family over for a visit. To his apartment. She snaps. Something wrong here?

All right. She smashes his computer, bites and scratches a makes such a ruckus that the cops have to come get her. They apparently releases her…and she crawls in his window and robs the place. She even took the bathroom scale, her and her probable cohorts. Wow…

So what? The guy had insurance, right? Uh-uh. No sirree.
So now his date’s gone, his apartment’s trashed, he’s got no computer and he’s all scratched and bitten up. Way to go.

A decent alarm system, some good locks on his windows (as long as he remembered to close them) and last but not least – insurance – would have made his pad breaking-and-entering-crazy-chick proof.

But hey. Poor guy.
Again, Dagbladet.no article.

  2. Well, CB, I’m a little unsure as to what you’re saying here. We here at SB think this guy should have taken some precautions, been a little ahead of the game and not be as trusting as he clearly is. Is that what you’re trying to say?

For the record, we believe internet dating to be a good thing, but you always have to make sure some safeguards are in place.
    That’s all.

Bare posetivt. Tulling. Ola Saigon

  4. Hey there OS. We’re gonna assume you’re talking to the guy from the article.
We’re not about to condone what the lady did, but you’re right – it could have been avoided.

  5. I’m sorry… but I don’t feel sorry for the guy. The fact that he doesn’t have insurance is one thing, but knowing Norwegian insurance companies I’m pretty sure he wouldn’t get a dime back, seeing as his window was obviously unlocked. Not only has he put himself in a rough spot, he has provided some criminal with a valid Norwegian passport as well (his passport got stolen too). That’s all we need, more African criminals in Norway. And for the record: I have nothing against the many law abiding Africans that come here every year. I’m just saying, this guy strikes me as either dumb as a brick, desperate or even more likely, both.

  6. Hey Chris. Nothing to be sorry about – we agree at least. Now, we wouldn’t wish it on anyone to get robbed like that, but like we’ve said, had the guy taken some precautions it could all have been avoided. Sad, really, seeing as only a teeny weenie bit of effort on his part could have saved him a lot of trouble and money.
You’re all too right about the passport. Any western-hemisphere passport is worth ten times its weight in gold to criminals of that kind.

A decent alarm system is one thing. Just remembering to lock your windows after you’ve been assaulted by someone who was really pissed off at you is generally free of charge.

  9. You could be naive living in Norway. I do almost never lock the car when its parked, and I’ve been poorly covered by insurance the most of my life. In my municipality there are no companies offering alarm systems for homes, and I doubt it is needed. Even the police here is unarmed (unless armed police is needed for a specific task).

I don’t know where the blogger is living, but the world doesn’t look the same everywhere.

He was doing the same things that a lot of norwegians do, and living the same way. He just had bad luck…
