Merchants of Death!
Well, only one, really.
International arms dealer Viktor Bout has been handed over to the US, after being arrested in Thailand in 2008. Infamous, and partially famous as the rumored inspiration behind the movie “Lord of War”, starring Nicholas Cage, Viktor is said to have prolonged and kept alive numerous armed conflicts around the world.
AG Holder had this to say;
“His extradition is a victory for the rule of law worldwide. Long considered one of the world’s most prolific arms traffickers, Mr. Bout will now appear in federal court in Manhattan to answer to charges of conspiring to sell millions of dollars worth of weapons to a terrorist organization for use in trying to kill Americans.”
Well. And other people as well, not just Americans. We should probably mention that there are other people in the world as well, that Viktor has been aiming for, and/or helped kill, maim and assassinate. Anyhoo…
The Russians, as usual, are not happy about all this. The US has been trying to get a hold of this guy for a while now, but the Russians want him home, for some reason, and are calling the extradition “illegal”, since the guy should be sent to his homeland.
One would think that it would be a relief for the Russians to not have to deal with him at all, either putting him down (since he’s an animal) and get the world’s human rights organizations all riled up, or keep him in jail, spending millions of rubles on feeding the guy another thirty or so years. But what do we know.
“It is very deplorable that the Thai government succumbed to the outside pressure and conducted the illegal extradition of Viktor Bout,” Russia’s Foreign Ministry said.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said: “We as a country will continue assisting Viktor Bout as a Russian citizen in every possible way.”
Very deplorable. Eloquent as ever, those Russians.
