Guest Post: 5 Tips for Upping Your Home Security
We’ve all heard the saying that we’re only as strong as our weakest link. This doesn’t only apply to people; it also applies to security systems. In other words, if you set up a system that is overly complicated, then those in your household will either work around it all or totally ignore it. It is important to remember that the people in your home are just as much a part of your security system as the system itself. Because of this you will have to take a realistic approach to your home security; you want to have the least amount of hassle with the most amount of security. In order to make this happen, follow these tips for better home security.
Tip 1: Look Busy!
A home that looks occupied has a lesser chance of being violated (and thus the people in it…). This is because most criminals are opportunistic and search for homes that look like there is nobody at home. The key is to make it look like someone is always at home even when the house is empty. This is especially important when you are out of town for any period of time. Thieves look for things such as full mailboxes, piled up newspapers and darkness. To help keep your home secure when you are out of town, inform the post office and paper carrier not to deliver, and keep various lights on in the home. If you do not want lights burning all day and night, set them on timers to go on and off at specific periods of time. In addition to these things, also keep a radio or television on just loud enough that anyone approaching your doors or windows can hear the sounds. Have a car parked in your driveway as well. If you are driving yours then ask a neighbor to park there for you.
Tip 2: Consider all Entrances
Many people only consider the most obvious points of entry; doors and windows. But if you think about it, there are other ways to get into your home. I found this out the hard way when someone attempted to gain access to my home through my garage. All they had to do was raise my garage door and taper with the lock on the door that led into my house. This was the last place I would have considered an intruder to use but I will not be making that mistake again. Now the lock on my garage stays firmly in place and I have a deadbolt on the inside door. Also consider any other point on entry such as skylights, attics and basements and any other openings that someone can squeeze through. Even if it seems impossible, make sure that everything is secure!
Tip 3: Peepholes and Deadbolts (sounds like a band name, don’t it?)
There have been many stories in the news lately that involve home invasions. Unfortunately, there are people who do not take the simple advice of asking “who is it?” before they open the door. This can be avoided by installing peepholes in your doors so that you can see who is there for yourself. Another good security investment is installing deadbolts on all of your doors. Please do not think that you are upping your safety by putting up chain locks. These are usually very easy to break and you do not want all there is between you and a stranger to be a breakable chain. Go for the deadbolts instead.
Tip 4: Get a Dog. A big one.
This may seem like a no-brainer, but many people do not consider dogs to be protection as much as they consider them as companions. Just the barking of a dog is sometimes enough to send a thief running. If you do not like dogs or cannot have one for whatever reason, there are gadgets that will sound off as a barking dog when someone gets too close to the home.
Tip 5: Install a Professional Alarm System
Alarm systems can be a wonderful way to boost your home security. However, what most people do not understand is that they do not offer much (if any) physical obstacle to the thief entering the home. Alarms are more of a type of psychological warfare. The door or window is tampered with and the alarm sounds. This frightens the thief and they take off. Even so, the sound of the alarm ups the chances of them getting caught. Some people feel that simply having an alarm system sign in their yard is sufficient. This may have been true once, but now thieves have caught onto that trick, so if you are going to put up a sign, have the alarm to back it up.
Home security is extremely important but does not have to be complicated. Simply mix some common sense with some technology and you will have a safe and secure home!

good advise you can also go thru the attic into the house
The best thing to do is be vigilant – and display as many outward signs as you can that your house is occupied and has multiple levels of security. If your neighbourhood hasn’t got one, consider opening up a neighbourhood watch scheme.
