Gear Up! Winter Security Gear, continued
Winter is here – or at least right around the corner, and the time to get ready for it is now.
Whether you’re a security officer, a LEO (that’s Law Enforcement Officer to you, chum), military or just an avid outdoorsman… ehrm, outdoorsperson, here are some tips that will serve you well when you’re picking out your gear for this cold season. (More here, by the way!)
Still have the stuff that we talked about last year? Great! If you don’t or you wore’em out (or you just fancy something new), read on!
Jackets:
Let’s just say here that we’re going to include all kinds of jackets here – parkas and vests and whatnot. It’s not really necessary to make headings for each of those separately, right? Right. So here we go.
There’s really nothing that can beat the Canada Goose parkas when it comes to keeping warm, dry and cozy no matter what the conditions on th outside of the jackets are. Hail coming sideways? That’s okay, since you can just close up that hood, park your hands in the deep, insulated pockets and settle in for the night. Or the day, whichever it may be. The Expedition Parka is in use both by civilians and governments all over the world, and rightly so. It keeps people happy when they have to be outside. That is all.
We’re going to continue with the shameless plug of Canada Goose for a bit, since we actually do love those things that much. The Expedition parka is a little bulky, we will admit as much, and that’s why we’re going to recommend this beauty – the Banff parka.
All right, we’ve pretty much covered the parkas and jackets, but we’ve got one more goodie for you, which will go well with just about any uniform – well, anything really; the Yorkville Bomber Jacket. Even the name is cool, which is something the inside of this thing is bound to be far from.
Socks’n’Stuff
If you’ve been outside in cold weather before, you know that your feet is just about the most important part to keep warm, aside from your head, perhaps. That being duly noted, here are some tips for you for both of those, and let’s start off with the bottom, and work our way up, shall we?
Most security officers or LEOs that work outside wear boots – if you’re not wearing boots this winter, you should probably sty in your office, ’cause it’s gonna get painful if you don’t. With good boots you need good socks, and that’s where these things come in: Browning Hosiery Men’s Tall Merino Wool Boot Sock (yes, the name’s a mouthful, but they work). If you feel like something even heavier, then these “35 Below” might be just the ticket.
The thing about socks, and we’ve said this before, many a time, is that you have to go for either pure wool, or as high a wool content you can find. “Smart wool” and Lycra and all those things are merely names for artificial fibers, which will absolutely steal your body heat away, no matter what the commercials say. Pure, natural Merino wool is the only safe bet.
That actually goes for hats and caps as well. Merino wool will not itch or leave red marks on your forehead, and it will stay warm whether the weather (nice one, huh?) is wet or dry.
Boots!
Don’t you worry – we’re actually going to do a whole post about boots, just like we usually do. It should be here shortly, just as soon as our testing panel has come in from the cold – with or without a spy or two – and you’ll know as soon as we do.
