A Faraday Caged Bed – How and Why on Earth?

This guest post comes from Bonnie and John, who’ve made practical use of the Faraday Cage for their own health’s sake. While we’ve focused mostly on the security applications, this is a very good use of them also, and an impressive DIY project! Also, please visit Bonnie and John’s fundraiser for their new efforts! ~SB Admin

The Faraday Cage Around Our Bed

Hi Everyone! We are a husband and wife team from Indiana. We built a Faraday Cage around our bed and have been sleeping inside it for three years now. We did this because the Faraday Cage can help block out harmful frequencies such as radio waves, cell phone transmissions, and Wi-Fi while we sleep. With all the electro-smog bombarding us our entire lives, we figure that sleeping in a radio-free zone for 8 hours a night means that 1/3 of our lives will be spent in our natural state of vibratory harmony. We believe it has helped us greatly by giving us a good night’s sleep and clearing our minds of the relentless frequencies that are flying around everywhere.

Now that we have tried this out for three years and we have done even more research on it, we want to improve the design of the Faraday Cage around our bed. We want to make it taller so we have more room to move around and sit up, we want to make the doors a bit smaller so they are easier to open and close at night when we’re sleepy, and we want to wrap the whole cage in a fine copper mesh that has very tiny holes so even more of the unwanted frequencies will be blocked out.

How does the Faraday Cage block out radio waves and electrical fields? Quite basically, when a radio wave or an electrical pulse hits the outer metal screen of the cage, it is distributed evenly over the surface of the cage but does not go through the screen to the inside (as long as the holes of the screen are smaller than the size of the frequency). The metal cage acts as a conductor, so it is charged up when the frequencies make contact. For this reason, it is a good idea to “ground” the cage so the electrical charge is channeled down into the ground and does not remain on the screen. We made a short video to show that a radio and a cell phone placed inside the Faraday Cage are unable to access any signal from outside the cage. You can see this video on our Indiegogo project page: http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/sleep-inside-a-faraday-cage/x/6359958

You might be asking yourself, “What’s it like to sleep inside a cage? Will I be able to get out easily during the night? Will I feel closed in?” We definitely had our concerns too, however; all our fears were whisked away by the obvious benefits we are enjoying. It feels good to get some peace and quiet at night and function normally. As if we had gone back in time to our younger years, we’ve turned our “cage” into a kind of “fort” and even added some glow-in-the-dark stars to the top.

We are currently raising funds at Indiegogo.com to build our new, updated Faraday Cage, and we want to show you how we do it, step-by-step, so you can do it too! Please check it out and help us spread the word. We Only Have Until April 1, 2014 to raise our funds for building our new Faraday Cage!

Many Thanks!  Bonnie & John

  1. Hi Guys!

Alternative: Sleep in the car. (or other similar structure, e.g. steel boat, garden house of corrugated iron sheet etc.)

My name is Marisa am tortured by eletromagnetic radio frequency EMF and wonders step q step how to build a faraday cage around a bed or other eletrostatic shielding to block cellular signal, microwave and radio frequency eletromagnetic?
