Finding Your Home’s Weak Spots – Before They Find You

By Gunnar Sommerfeldt

Owning a home – or even just renting one – brings with it a lot of responsibility. Keeping up with repairs, maintenance and improvements as they become necessary can sometimes feel like a full time job, and when one gets to that point, keeping up becomes tedious and tiresome, and that’s when things usually start to fall apart.

There are however ages things that you can do to make sure your workload won’t break your back, and also keep you and your loved ones safer on tip if the bargain. Finding your home’s weak spots is essential, and we’ll talk about that here.

The first thing to do, as always, is making a plan. Make a list of all the things you are aware of that needs your attention around the house, be it a broken door or a new dryer. Make sure that you have included everything, and then take a detailed inventory of your home. Walk through each room and look for anything that is out if order. Include anything you find on your list. The idea is to get to the weak points before they have a chance to develop.

– Do the easy things first. A broken dryer can be a fire hazard. Get electrical appliances and machinery either fixed or replaced right away. Home fires take a lot of lives each and every day, and the accidental fires are often the results of electricity going where it should not.

Nine out if ten accidents that result in injury happen at home, so make sure your environment is as hazard fee as possible. Get rid of that slippery doormat. Make sure your carpets have anti- skid rubber underneath – that rubber can be bought in almost any store that sells home improvement items.

And so on. Do the small things first, and you’ll see results right away.

– Do the bigger things. When I say bigger things, I don’t mean things that would require you to hire a crane and a work-crew, but rather giving your home a once-over. Move your fridge and your stove out, check electrical cords and plugs for wear or deterioration, check gas lines for the same and make sure you go over your water heater – if you didn’t watch the Mythbusters episode where one of those things blows up, you should. If you have watched it, you know what I mean.

Make it a habit to do this once-over every six months or so, and keep track of the problems that you know about, and follow up. This will keep your home in great condition, you will save money in the long run, and your insurance premiums will stay low when you have no unnecessary accidents or mishaps.
