Things To Pack In A Bug Out Bag

By

A bug out bag is a survivalist’s best friend. By definition, it is a bag, which contains all the essentials for a person to live independently for at least three days or more. Other names for the kit include the BOB, the 72-hour kit, a GO bag, a grab bag, a Get Out of Dodge or GOOD bag or even a battle box. Items that can be fitted into the bag varies from one survivalist to another, depending on factors such as the environment, terrain, climate and availability of certain items. Here are a few suggested items. It is by no means the ultimate bug out bag check list but a suggestion of items worth considering. In the end, it is up to the individual to decide what to pack into their kit.

There are many bug out bag lists specified online, in books, magazines and other forms of media. The key with making your own bug out bag is to pack the necessities. A BOB is normally used in cases where in an emergency evacuation of the area is necessary. Hence, three days is enough although some experts recommend packing enough to last for a much longer period.

Water is one essential when it comes to bug out kits. Different regions of the globe have varying recommendations on how much water one should carry. For instance, in the US, the amount is a gallon (3.78 liters) a day while in Canada, the amount is two liters of drinking water a day. Packing enough water for three days may seem heavy for some. One alternative is bringing pans to boil water, iodine tablets or consider investing in a water filter.

Pack your own first aid kit. This is different from those available from the local drugstore, grocery or mall. There are kits with hundreds of items included inside. A large percentage of these items are not necessary while other items are left out. Consider the area where you will be evacuating. Think of the possible dangers and injuries such as insect or animal bites and bring medications and medical essentials with those in mind.

A heavy-duty knife should also be included inside the bug out bag. This can help in a variety of situations including cutting food, materials or protecting one’s self from predators, whether in animal or human form. There are numerous brands and models available on the market. As a guide, invest in a knife which has been used or tested using the same standards as those used in the military. These may be costly but are worth the investment.

Remember to pack extra clothing good for the three-day evacuation or emergency. Durable pants and shirts are a must. Avoid jeans as these tend to be heavy. Also, remember to bring a jacket, poncho or raincoat, depending on the weather and the climate. A bandana is also an essential thing to pack in a bug out bag as it has many uses ranging from a wipe to a water filter and sling among others.

  1. very good, however you may want to include boots. yes you should already be wearing a good pair of sturdy hiking boots, but you also want to bring another pair along as well with a different print on the bottom as to confuse any tails you may have.
