Implementing security cameras as an integral part of your home security system is an excellent plan, one that will enhance safety and serve as a deterrent to crime.

Complete Cam System

In general terms, home security systems are not fully complete without including a camera. Security camera systems provide property owners with the ability to view any would-be intruders, and give you a viewpoint on your surrounding that allows you to assess any risks to your security. In other words, security cameras are like having a second set of eyes watching your home and its perimeter.

In order to add a security camera to your home system, you simply need to be sure the camera is compatible with your security system. Then, the camera is easily connected to your central security system. Once installed and mounted, the security camera will function by sending a recorded digital or analog image to your cell phone, computer, television or DVR. The images are also sent to your security system’s monitoring center, so that they can see and assess any potential problems just as you can.

Today, there are several types of wireless security cameras available. One type of security camera used in the home works through radio frequencies, storing images to your computer or a DVR. You can also view images through a closed circuit television monitor if you purchase and equip your home with this capability. This type of system is not without flaws, as sometimes images are blurry, and data is not usually fully secured. With an unencrypted signal, the images could be hacked and viewing data seen by others.

Current technology has seen an upsurge in security cameras which use WiFi to send their visual images. This type of security camera uses a wireless router to transmit the signal over the Internet and from there directly on to your computer. Then, from your computer, smart phone, or virtually any location with an Internet connection, you will be able to see digital images as well as record them. And you can have the images sent to other viewers, or other devices as well. With this type of system you’ll find it easy to monitor your home no matter where you are, allowing on-the-go flexible viewing choices. Even more importantly though, these wireless images are encrypted, which means that the visual image transmissions are just about impossible to hack.

Using an encrypted transmission means that the visual image data sent by your camera on to your home security system control center cannot be authorized by any outside viewers attempting to opt in. There is zero information translated to anyone unauthorized to view the images.

You’ll find that there are many different kinds of security camera systems to choose. They will vary in terms of size, shape, and transmitting frequencies, as well as in regard to motion detector and night vision performance.

Common wireless camera frequencies include 900MHz, 2.4 Ghz, and 5.8 Ghz. The lower the frequency number, usually the more powerful the camera, making your camera able to more effectively pass through walls or other objects that could potentially block imaging. Higher frequency camera frequencies may be less likely to reach through walls and solid objects; and because of this more limited range, you may need to purchase additional wireless cameras to fully monitor your property.

Wireless cameras come in many shapes and sizes as well as frequencies. Smaller cameras may be ideal if you want to conceal your wireless surveillance for either security or aesthetics. In many cases though, a visible camera on your property’s exterior can work as a good deterrent to would be intruders, as well as offering a larger imaging range.

No matter which type of camera system you select, including a visual monitoring device in your home security system is a simple addition that will definitely enhance your control of your environment and increase your property’s safety.
