Carthieves – Likely to Kill You? How to Survive a Robbery

The common and accepted mantra when it comes to dealing with criminals is that your stuff is less important than you. Following that mantra will sometimes hurt you financially, since it means giving your assailant whatever he/she wishes in a robbery situation, and that includes your car. If you’re ever carjacked or robbed, or you come across someone stealing your car, just let them have it. It’s not worth dying over, like this Norwegian woman found out the hard way.

There are times when it feels right to stand up for what’s yours, and get in the way of robbers and thieves and whatnot, but you just never know what kind of people you’re dealing with. Robbers and assailants may be armed, not armed, crazy or not, desperate or just out for the thrill of it. You might get lucky once or twice, but you won’t get lucky every time, and that’s apt to get you hurt or killed.

So what should you do when some punk robber is stealing your car or robbing you on the street? Nothing at all is the easy answer. Give the assailant anything and everything, comply with all demands and be humble. Right then and there, they have the power, you don’t.

You don’t want your friends and family to have to arrange a memorial service for you, right?

There are some other things that you should look out for when there’s someone stealing your car or your purse or you find yourself at gunpoint for some other reason. Behavioral traits that are inherent in humans can be actively dangerous to you when your life is threatened in this way, and avoiding them can be the difference between life and death. Here’s a few examples, and also check out our article here.

  • Even though it’s a reflex in humans, don’t look them in the eyes. It will be read as an aggressive move by anyone who is already aggressive.
  • Don’t speak to them unless you’re spoken to first, and then avoid negative answers. Say yes, and comply with any demands. (If you’re dealing with e.g. a rapist, that doesn’t fly, of course. We’re talking about robberies and the likes of it).
  • Keep a humble body posture – e.g. head down, hands along the sides, no sudden movements at all.

There are no sure ways to escape a gunpoint robbery, but there are ways to minimize your risks. And for the love of everything holy – remember that your stuff is worth less than your life, insured or not. It’s just not worth getting yourself killed over.
