Energy Services Security Officer

Any Security Officer has a set of responsibilities, but a specific position or definition of duties can either add to or deduct from these. Usually a specific position adds to the duties.

See the basic Security Officer duties, responsibilities and rights here.

The “Energy Services Security Officer” classification was coined by Securitas when receiving the request to design a specialized protection service for nuclear plants, hydroelectrical plants and other energy producing facilities. In addition to normal guard duties, there are various other factors that has to be taken into account when seeing to the safety of such installations. Securitas lists the following as important parts of the Energy Services program as follows;

NRC compliant self-screening program
• Exercise preparation and readiness reviews
• Adversary team training
• Physical security assessments
• Target set and response strategy development
• Comprehensive leadership development programs
• Contingency support and planning

These points require extensive training on the part of the security officers, and also the security supervisors, be it shift supervisors or higher.

In special locations, the ESS Officer will also be armed – or as Securitas says;

“[The mission is to] protect owners, operators and managers of nuclear materials and other sensitive assets, with tactically trained and armed security officers of the highest quality. The nature of Energy Service contracts with nuclear and energy customers mandates close adherence to stringent federal requirements. “
