NATID numbers

A NATID is a NATional IDentification number. In the US, a Social Security Number is the standard NATID, but there is no “world wide” standard for such numbers.

A valid ID card/document will in most cases contain the person’s NATID, name and picture.

In Europe, the NATID usually consists of a person’s date of birth in some format (YYYY/MM/DD or DDMMYY or some other format) and an additional number. Sweden has an additional 4 digits, while Norway has 5, for example. Foreign workers, diplomats or other legal aliens may have other NATID formats assigned to them. Such numbers are used as work permit identification, and not citizenship.

Most European countries will only see an ID document as valid if it has the person’s NATID included, but may in some cases disregard expiration dates. I.e. it is better, in Europe, to possess an expired ID than none at all.
