“Security Officer” in itself is a general term, used to describe a range of security guards that have basic training or limited specialization.
The normal security officer will have basic training (note: many security officers are former military-, police-, or fire/emt officers. When we say basic training, we are referring to the security company’s training plan) in first aid, heart-starters, law and psychology.
General duties of a basic security officer will include a “see and be seen” approach in public places, maintining him or herself in a position to be seen by as many as possible, and in the process also being able to keep an eye on the surroundings.
A uniformed security officer is a first-line defense against unwanted activity, persons or events in any given place, be it public or private. The security officer often has priority contacts with police-, fire- and and EMS departments, has access to the aids and resources of the premises themselves, and can easily call in assistance should it be needed.
In any given place, the security guard has been delegated the owner’s rights, and will be able to utilize them as is proper. Should a person or persons make themselves unwanted, the security officer can either ban them or detain such individuals until police arrives.
It is important to see the difference between security officers and police officers – the security officer is not part of any police department, and would in most cases prefer not to be confused with police. The duties and responsibilities differ, but in case of need, the security guard to any specific location will normally be able to help you faster and more efficiently than police who may not know the premises, routines or availability of resources.
Duties may include:
- Maintaining order
- Render assistance
- Fire safety inspections
- Liaison with public safety departments
- Guest / visitor registration
- Access control / restricted areas maintenance
- Respond to medical emergencies
- Respond to crime and violations of local code
