Product Review: Surefire E2D-BK Defender

Let’s go back to the standard layout here, and start with the specs:

• Batteries – Two lithium 123A 3.0 Volt with 10-year shelf life
• Lamp assembly/Runtime – SureFire MN03 xenon gas-filled lamp assembly with 60 lumens output for 75 mi
• Construction – CNC machined aerospace-grade aluminum. Hard anodized finish.
• Lightweight and slim, with a stainless steel pocket clip

That’s about it.

The Surefire is sturdy, dependable and so bright it will literally hurt your eyes if you catch a flash from it at an unguarded moment. The choice of materials makes sure that it doesn’t rust, and the steady, snug fitting lamp assembly makes sure that the light will still come on after you drop it a few (hundred) times – it’s happened to us.

There are brighter lights out there than this, and Surefire itself has some of them in stock, but this is among the flashlights with the best balance between power and power supply. You needn’t worry that this one will run out of battery power after a few uses, and it will be bright right up until the end of the battery capacity.

There’s also something to be said about the Defender’s “special” ability. Press the sharp edges into the back of the hand of anyone, and they will almost instantly be meek as lambs. It’s not something you should do unmotivated, of course, but if you’re hard pressed for methods to subdue someone, or make someone let go of, or drop something, this is very efficient.

Conclusion

This turned out to be a short product review, for once, and that is due to only one thing: this is an extremely high quality flashlight. Small enough to keep in your pocket, but “big” enough to light up anything when the sun has gone down.

Tough construction, high usability, good battery duration and a very tough lamp makes this something that any LE or security professional – or outdoorsman for that matter  – should have stashed in an easily accessible pocket. All day, every day. Even at night.
